Power (W)

Electrical power is the result of dividing the energy consumed by the time it takes to be consumed. Its unit of measurement is watts or kilowatts, “W” or “kW”.

Colour temperature – Kelvin (K)

Colour temperature could be defined as the predominance of certain colours in WHITE lighting. In this way, white can be modified towards amber or towards blue. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin and it is only applied to white lights. All other colours don’t have a colour temperature. For this reason, white lights, which have a predominance of amber, will be called warm lights and white lights, with a predominance of blue, will be called cool whites.

When we are in a room lit by a warm light, we feel like we are in a warm and comfortable environment. On the contrary, if we are in a room lit by cool lights, we feel like we are in a cool atmosphere.

The colour temperature is approximate since there are many factors which can produce changes. Unless you have a thermocolorimetre, you can’t know exactly the colour temperature of your luminaire.

The beam angle of a lamp is the angle at which light is emitted. The Beam angle is the angle between the two directions opposed to each other over the beam axis for which the luminous intensity is half that of the maximum luminous intensity. The viewing angle choice also affects the LED output intensity.

Number of LEDs

Another important aspect of a LED lamp is the quantity of diodes by which they are composed. In many cases, diodes are positioned along the surface of the tube and they are supported by a printed circuit board. The light distribution depends on the number of diodes. A tube with 400 diodes won’t have the same performance as tube with 270 diodes; the first one will achieve a more uniform light distribution.

A lumen is the measure of the total “amount” of visible light emitted by a source. The fact is that the lack of union between different manufacturers doesn’t allow the unification of criteria. However, theory tells us that a led can generate between 60 and 90 lumens. As a curious fact, the record of lumens generated by a led was 150 lm/w. If you want to know the lumens generated by a LED bulb, you can use this formula:

Real lumens = number of watts x 70

70 is an average value which corresponds to most bulbs in the market. Therefore, a 12W LED bulb would offer a light output of 840 lm. These bulbs could replace a 60W incandescent bulb. As you can see, they both generate the same quantity of light but thanks to the LED bulb, you will save energy.

One of the problems with LED lighting is its opening angle. That’s why, we should check its specifications and the recommended uses. The good news is that technology used in LED has improved a lot and now you can find LED bulbs that they alone can light a room.

If you buy LED bulbs whose opening angle is of 40º, you will obtain a more focused light, they would be perfect for lighting specific points like a painting, a glass cabinet etc. Therefore, if you want to buy a bulb for your bedroom you will need a bulb with an opening angle of 120º. However, if the room is bigger you will need to use more than one bulb.

Colour temperature

The Kelvin indicates the type of colour which our bulb will have. Depending on the number, we will be able to have three types of light: warm white, neutral white and cool white. Each colour has a more or less practical application. Cool white is suitable to be placed in areas that require a white light such as the garage, the box room… Neutral white is suitable to be used in bathrooms, kitchens or any working place. Lastly, warm White is suitable to be placed in bedrooms, living rooms and so on because it offers an ambient lighting.

When shopping a bulb, you can consult the temperature. If the bulb is around 3000K, it will emit a warm white, if it is around 4500K, it will emit a neutral white and if it is around 5800K, it will emit a cool white. It is also interesting to look at the function of dimmers which are used to create an atmosphere by regulating the intensity.
