There is a series of helpful tips for installing correctly the LED strips. Flexible LED strips are very easy to install thanks to a 3M self-adhesive The most models in the market are usually good for indoor and outdoor areas thanks to their IP 65 protection rating.

One of the advantages of LED strips is that you can modify their size depending on where you want to install them: the strips can be cut every 3 LEDs , so you can make them shorter or longer

Use of controllers

Controllers and dimmers are used to adjust the light intensity, the colour tones and the modes of LED strips. They can be fixed or they can work thanks to a remote control. Here you can find all available models

Use of amplifiers

When do you have to use an amplifier? If you are going to use a controller, either with a one-colour LED strip or with a RGB led strip, and if the length of the installation is greater than 8 metres, you will need an amplifier every 8 metres so the signal and the intensity can reach perfectly.
As a general rule, LED strips don’t usually use a controller but if you want to use it, you will need an amplifier.

Tips and warnings

We have several types of connector to splice the LED strips. We have flexible connectors (faster to install but low resistant) or rigid connectors, far more resistant and safe. Depending on the circumstances you will choose one or the other. For a one-colour LED strip, you will use 2 Pin-connectors, while for RGB strips you will use 4 Pin-connectors.

LED strips protection rating (IP): The strips which have a high degree of protection are sensible to pressure and flexion. Choose the most suitable strip taking into account the protection rating. Use a Sharp scissors to divide the strip, the use of unsuitable tools can damage the strip. Don’t crush, bend or hit the strip because the SMD and the control Electronics could be damaged.

Sensitive electronics: These strips are equipped with very sensitive control electronics. Don’t place, divide or weld the strips with the power on. This damage isn’t covered by the guarantee.

Do not bend: Strips should be placed at least within a radius of curvature of 2cm. The thinnest strips can easily bend in an angle of 90º. Nevertheless, this can be done in an appropriate point (e.g. in the diving line). The strip should be immediately fixed in order to prevent a material breakage. The damage caused by bending incorrectly the strip is not covered by the guarantee.

ONE-COLOUR LED STRIPS

One-colour LED strips

Flexible and one-colour LED strips include multicolour leds on their surface (white, blue, yellow, red, green). They are slimline and self-adhesive (thanks to a power 3M ribbon). They are available in 5 metre-reels and they can be cut and connected in order to be easily adapted to every surface. Led strips split up into two sorts depending on the installed diode. SMD5050 strips have a high power and bright, whereas SMD3528 strips are low-power, low-energy consumption and cheaper.

Installation of one-colour LED strips

Installation of one-colour LED strips (2 wires). I will take the example of a 24W one-colour LED strip (white, red, green, yellow or blue) for indoor installations. If you want to install them in an outdoor area or you want to install a more powerful LED strip, you should only replace this power supply with another one whose protection rating higher. Installation of 220V LED strips

It is very easy. With 220V LED strips, you can install up to 50 metres per supplier, without risk of voltage drops. They require no transformer, amplifier or additional adaptor. This means big savings in materials and labour compared to 12/24V LED strips.
220V LED strips can be cut into smaller strips of 1 metre. So, these strips significantly reduce the probability of failures, they use series and parallel circuits. If an area is damaged (each area has one metre), it doesn´t affect the other parts.

Advantages

As every flexible LED strip, 220V strips have a powerful 3M adhesive used to install the strip in any surface. These LED strips have a high quality and a high resistance; moreover they have different programmed effects and a bright light. However, the real difference is their possibility to produce 3 kinds of white: warm white, cool white and neutral white.

You can adapt its different effects and colours according to the time of the day or night or according to a place or a specific room. Differences between SMD 3528 & SMD 5050

LED strips are mounted in a printed circuit “100% flexible strip with a powerful 3M self-adhesive back, that’s why it can be easily installed in every surface and you can choose between two varieties: : SMD3528 and SMD5050. The acronym SMD (Surface Mounted Device) refers to the method in which LED are mounted onto the strip.

SMD3528 strips

SMD3528 flexible LED strips are low consumption. The average consumption of this SMD3528 LED strip is 5W/m. Most of these strips can be cut every 3 LEDs or every 50mm for 300LEDs rolls and every 25mm for 600LEDs rolls. SMD3528 strips are usually one-colour and they are the most economical solution.

SMD5050 strips

The SMD5050 strips are high powerful. They are also known as three-core strips and they offer a light intensity 3 times greater than a SMD3528 strip, that’s why the SMD5050 LED strip is more suitable for areas which are exposed to high levels of ambient light. They are more expensive and they are used in installations with high requirements of luminosity.

Which is the best strip?

It depends. If you want a basic lighting, a one-colour strip and an affordable price, you should choose a SMD 3528 strip.
For more exigent projects or RGB installations, you should acquire a SMD 5050.

Connect two tracks of LED strips

LED strips can be adapted to any size because you can cut them every 3 LEDs or connect them with other LED strip. You can also lengthen the strip by taking into account that you will need an amplifier each 8 metres of installation. Each connection and installation has a specific connector.

Join the tracks: Depending on the installation needs, there are different types of connectors: if your strip is RGB (4 wires) or one-colour (2 wires) you will be able to have two sorts of connectors.

Rigid connectors:Rigid connectors or connector cables.
They are safer and resistant connections. You can join two strips to do a right line, a right angle or even join two strips in “T” or “X” shapes.

Flexible cables. They are less robust connectors which give you more possibilities of connections.
